And so we begin with Lilo & Stitch...
*Sigh.* Amazing film.
You know the premise... Stitch is a bio-engineered alien life form created to cause chaos and rampage on an unsuspecting universe. His creator is caught, and Stitch is sentenced to exile on an asteroid. Only the little blue bugger is clever and manages to escape, stealing a small ship and hyperdrives to Earth, specifically, a small island in the Hawaiian islands.
He immediately goes on a rampage, but soon softens after he's adopted by Lilo and her big sister, Nonni. But there's danger around every palm tree as his creator is sent to recapture him...
I will not give any more away, plot-wise, but will offer a few highlights:
The Good
1) Stitch builds a replica of San Franciso in Lilo's bedroom and proceeds to go on a rampage of it, la Godzilla
2) The Elvis Presley soundtrack (the man is still the King)
3) The voices are perfectly matched for the characters
4) The story is heart-tugging (big poppa
5) Laugh-out-loud jokes (esp. with Stitch in the animal shelter)
6) The animation is beautiful to look at, and the animators did a fine job of actually capturing the look of the Hawaiian people (no generic white-breads here)
7) No "over-powering" love story
The Bad
Nothing really. It was really well done.
Okay, one minor quibble. During the credits, they played a rockin' cover of Elvis' "Can't Help Falling in Love". This song had Liv and I jivving in our seats. We had to know who was the singer... then we started to get afraid, 'cuz we thought maybe it was one of those bubble-gum teen singers...
... and we were right. "A-Teens", they're called. Never heard of 'em before, I think they're European (signed to a Denmark label). *Sigh.* So cold...
But damn, this movie is definitely worth $13.50.
I give Lilo & Stitch a hearty thumbs up.
Next on our list... Men in Black II
Over to you, Liv...
